I've ridden the bench so the coach's klutzy kid could play and I've been a
star. I have struck out with the bases loaded in the last inning and I have won a homerun derby. I have missed free throws
that would have won a basketball game and pitched a two-hit shutout against one of the best teams in the country with Cal
Ripken, Jr. watching in the stands. I've gotten home after practice at 9:30 pm and had to face four hours of homework.
I have been abandoned by jealous friends. I have been cheered for my accomplishments and cursed out and called foul names
by coaches. Kids may be inexperienced in sports and life, but we're not stupid. I've learned a lot from what I've
seen and done in kids'sports.
I'm an eightteen year old student-athlete, a work in progress. I am a senior in high school
and play baseball for my school, the Gilman Greyhounds and in the Metro League on the Rosedale American Legion Team.
I have played youth sports since I was five years old. Two achievements stand out in my mind: having been awarded the Daniel
C. Ammidon Citizenship Award and having perfect attendance since pre-school.
Most recently, I have had the honor of being
selected as a Pinkard Scholar! As a Pinkard Scholar I have the privilege of studying with great Christian theologians
and earning college credits at St. Mary's Seminary and University.
In addition to school and sports, I am passionate about participating
in several important organizations:
Special Operations Warrior Foundation
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides full scholarship grants and educational
and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions
and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families.
CityLit Project
CityLit is all about enthusiasm for the literary
arts in Baltimore. CityLit builds and connects a community of readers and writers across Maryland through public events, workshops,
publishing and teamwork. Green Grass brings
children from one of Baltimore's toughest inner-city neighborhoods to play on Gilman's green grass. Coordinated by Anton Vishio,
Green Grass pairs Gilman students with kids from Echo House Multi-Service Center, located in southwest Baltimore. With their
Gilman partners, the kids enjoy many sports and activities that we take for granted as everyday occurrences.
I enjoy participating in the Youth Leadership Academy,
sponsored by the Baltimore County Police Department. Taught by the best role-models around, Baltimore's Finest, and
kids from all walks of life, we learn real life lessons dealing with leadership, responsible citizenship, respect,
trust, community service and life coping skills.
